Soaps and astringents can often be too drying, especially during the winter months. Cleansing lotions, especially chosen for your skin type, can clean the skin without excessively drying the skin. Even if skin is oily, it’s best to choose a gentle cleanser, because although the removal of excessive oil is desirable, removing too much oil can leave the skin overly dry and vulnerable. Take special care when washing sensitive areas of the face, such as the cheeks and around the eyes. When washing and rinsing the face, take care to use lukewarm water instead of hot water, as hot water can also cause the skin to lose moisture.
After carefully washing the skin, blot the skin dry and immediately apply a good moisturizer. Moisturizers not only hydrate the skin, but help preserve the skin’s natural moisture levels. To provide proper dry facial skin care during the day, use a light day cream or lotion to seal in moisture, either before applying makeup, or just by itself. If you are going to be spending time outside, choose one that contains a sunscreen, even if it’s not summer.
